Natasha Thuemler became Indwell’s executive director in late January, having served with Indwell for over 15 years in various roles, most recently as regional director for Indwell’s southwest region. With this existing wealth of experience and commitment to Indwell’s mission of creating and operating affordable housing communities that support people seeking health, wellness, and belonging, Thuemler was well qualified to step into the role as leader for Indwell’s 300+ staff in 10 cities. As she reflected on her first two months in the new position, Thuemler noted the amount of change that has been happening and her hopes for the future.
“We are in a season of many changes,” she said, noting that the Indwell Family of Companies has expanded to include Flourish (a non-profit real estate development services company) and Gather (a non-profit focused on creating affordable housing). She also highlighted the expansion of Indwell into three new municipalities (Brantford, Halton (Burlington), and Lambton County (Sarnia)), the adaptation that is underway in response to Canada’s new federal agency, Build Canada Homes, and the variety of new Indwell properties in various stages of development and construction. “Despite all these changes, Indwell continues to stay steadfast in our vision of Hope and Homes for All, with a goal of serving more than 2,000 people in 2028.”
Thuemler’s executive director role is a new position whose responsibilities had previously been filled by several senior staff including CEO Jeff Neven, who has handed over day-to-day operations of Indwell to Thuemler as he focuses on the full family of Indwell companies. Thuemler said that moving from a focus on leading Indwell’s programs in the southwest region to overseeing all programs across southern Ontario has helped her to appreciate the scale and impact of Indwell’s work.
“Supportive housing is so much more than providing people with homes,” she explained. “As each person receives the individualized supports and encouragement they need to thrive in their own home and meet their personal goals, not only does it lead to true transformation for that individual, but the entire community sees positive impacts.”
From Hamilton to London, and Mississauga to Waterloo, Indwell has been creating lasting and positive changes in the face of chronic homelessness. Thuemler has a front row seat to see these changes and hear the stories of impact that Indwell is inspiring.
“I’m in awe at the work of our support staff and the work they do daily. They not only lend their expertise but also compassion and relationships — fostering a real sense of belonging for our tenants. Their efforts are what bring real trust and proof to the difference supportive housing can make. With the opening of an additional 195 homes this year, we look forward to continuing demonstrating this incredible impact.”
Indwell currently serves over 1,400 tenants across 10 cities, with an additional 367 apartments under construction and over 700 in various stages of design development. Learn more about new projects. You can also support ongoing programming by giving a Gift of Hope.
