Local charity Indwell wins national developer award
Green Building Excellence "Inspiring Home" Award 2019 - awarded to Indwell for their Parkdale Landing Affordable Housing Retrofit

HAMILTON, ON – Indwell is very pleased to announce that Hamilton’s Parkdale Landing project has won the national Green Building Excellence – Inspiring Home Award presented by the Canada Green Building Council. Indwell’s industry-leading development team for Parkdale Landing included Invizij Architects, Schilthuis Construction, CK Engineering, and Kalos Engineering. Peel Passive House was the energy-efficiency consultant on the project.

Parkdale Landing, which officially opened in the fall of 2018, transformed the former George & Mary’s Tavern into 57 affordable apartments with ground-floor commercial spaces and a community culinary centre. The Passive House standard for retrofit/adaptive-reuse projects, EnerPHit, provided the ambitious energy-efficiency standards, including air tightness threshold of 1 ACH50 (air changes per hour at 50 Pascals). The team of contractors led by Schilthuis Construction far exceeded this target, testing at 0.3ACH50 upon completion. The building is helping the development industry reimagine how possible it is to achieve significant energy and emissions reductions while still building to the highest quality and aesthetic standards. Parkdale Landing was also recently awarded a design award by the Hamilton Burlington Society of Architects (HBSA).

Indwell continues to pursue ambitious targets for affordable, energy-efficient multi-residential developments. The latest project is 50 additional new apartments at Parkdale Landing, with a public Project Launch event scheduled for Tuesday, June 4th at 3:30pm.

Jeff Neven, Executive Director at Indwell comments,

We are so pleased to have our projects catching the attention of people across Canada, because as our community decides that we care about ending homelessness, we can achieve so much by building new affordable housing. In fact, we’re not only transforming lives, but we’re renewing our urban fabric and taking meaningful action on addressing climate change, too. That’s the power of investing for maximum public benefit in everything we do.

Emma Cubitt, Principal at Invizij Architects comments,

Our firm believes that every building we design can help our communities flourish, so we are pleased to be part of the Indwell team creating award-winning projects. Buildings like Parkdale Landing are showing that our local Hamilton development community is leading our country in adapting to new functional and performance needs of our built environment.
