You’re the dreamers that know our cities need more affordable housing. Over this past summer and early fall 108 people moved into their new homes at The Oaks in Hamilton. And in September about 350 of you—supporters, friends, and neighbours—joined in celebration of these homes. Many of you gave towards this project, and the results are stunning: three beautiful distinct buildings connected by an inner courtyard. As I looked out over the crowd gathered in the new courtyard, I realized I was seeing good dreams become reality.
Many of you are also building these good dreams into the future, to foster stability and wellness through supports in our programs. Most of us have supports built into our everyday lives, whether it comes from a family member, neighbour, medical professional, or counsellor. As Indwell’s direct support staff know, this is where the hard (but good!) work begins: supporting each other in communities like The Oaks, as people experience the dignity and hope that’s exemplified in the words of Jesus: “The commandments…are summed up in this one command: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself’” (Romans 13:9). If you’re a praying person, please remember the continued adjustment of tenants and staff to this community.
This newsletter highlights the importance of good design and the gift of beauty. When I dropped by The Oaks recently, there were three puzzles on the go in a common room, a beautiful handmade quilt decorating a wall, and memorabilia from the former Royal Oak Dairy enhancing common areas. A tenant commented on how much they enjoyed watching local artist Lester Coloma paint stunning mural on an exterior wall. Beauty in our lives is a reminder of how we’re loved by our Creator!
For some of our new neighbours, previous barriers to housing include addictions and substance use disorders. Your care in creating good homes means our staff teams can support tenants in, at times, very difficult and complex circumstances. The article on page three outlines the recovery approach our staff are engaged in. Like you, we long for healing and wholeness for everyone and we hope this article will fill you with the hope we have for each person, regardless of their circumstances.
