Mississauga’s Lakeshore community is home to two vital organizations working to support individuals in need: Indwell’s Lakeshore Lofts and The Compass Food Bank & Outreach Centre. While these organizations share a commitment to improving lives, their missions and services differ in important ways.
Who is Indwell?
Indwell is a Christian charity that creates and operates affordable and supportive housing communities across southern Ontario. Their Lakeshore Lofts, located at 425 Lakeshore Road East, opened in 2022, offering 68 supportive housing units for individuals who have experienced homelessness, often due to mental health, physical health challenges, or affordability issues.
Key features of Indwell's Lakeshore Lofts:
- Permanent housing, not a shelter, with deeply affordable rents geared to ODSP shelter allowances.
- Supportive services to help tenants maintain housing stability, health, and well-being.
- Common spaces for social activities such as baking, karaoke, and community gatherings.
- Strong partnerships with community groups, churches, and social service organizations.
Who is The Compass Food Bank & Outreach Centre?
Located on the ground floor of Indwell’s Lakeshore Lofts, The Compass Food Bank & Outreach Centre provides food and essential services to individuals and families experiencing food insecurity and homelessness. It is a separate non-profit organization that serves over 2,000 individuals weekly, including 725 children, by distributing groceries, hygiene items, and providing hot meals.
Key features of The Compass:
- Weekly grocery distribution for individuals and families in need
- Free hot meals served daily
- Outreach services that connect individuals with housing, employment, and mental health support
- A volunteer-driven model, relying on over 400 volunteers to provide essential service
Working together for a stronger community
While Indwell and The Compass have different missions, they complement one another in serving south Mississauga’s most vulnerable residents. The Compass rents its space from Indwell, allowing people in need of food support to access services right where they live or nearby.
By working together, these organizations create a holistic support system, ensuring that people have not only a place to live but also the nourishment and assistance needed to thrive.
