Indwell: Myth vs. Fact

Remember the TV show Mythbusters? It was a show where the hosts tested out the validity of rumours, myths, and news stories to see if what they proclaimed was actually true. Mythbusters was popular for a long time because it addressed our very human curiosity about whether certain things are true. We’ve all heard things that seem outrageous, out of character, or simply confusing due to a lack of information.

Indwell often receives questions from people seeking information about who we are. Some individuals inquire about specific details they’ve heard, questioning the accuracy of these representations of our organization and its activities. So, we thought we’d dedicate a section of this newsletter to addressing some of these myths and facts.

FACT: INDWELL IS BOTH AN AFFORDABLE HOUSING DEVELOPER AND A HEALTH SERVICE PROVIDER.

We often hear people ask if Indwell is a developer or a health service provider. The answer is both — and we're landlords. We build and operate supportive housing. All direct support staff ensure tenants receive health care, as well as housing and social supports.

MYTH: INDWELL BUILDS TRANSITIONAL HOUSING AND/OR SHELTERS.

Indwell builds permanent supportive housing which is different than transitional housing. As experienced housing providers, we offer homes, providing high-quality and affordable rental apartments. Our housing model offers a variety of supports amongst our different communities.

FACT: ANYONE IN NEED OF SUPPORTIVE HOUSING CAN APPLY TO INDWELL.

Indwell’s vision is “Hope and Homes for All.” We’re a Christian charity that builds and operates supportive housing communities for everyone who would benefit from deeply affordable and supportive housing.

MYTH: INDWELL’S RENT IS DETERMINED BY INDIVIDUAL TENANTS' INCOME.

Indwell's rental fees are determined by supports and services available in their program, and are geared to be deeply affordable for people who receive a shelter allowance from the Ontario Disability Support Program.

MYTH: INDWELL RECEIVES GOVERNMENT FUNDING SO IT IS NOT RELIANT ON DONORS.

Last year, the majority of Indwell's income came from tenant rent and donations. Our funding model relies on contributions from individuals, community groups, businesses, churches, foundations, as well as grants from all levels of government. We are so grateful for our wonderful donors that make up Indwell's community of care!

Send a note of encouragement

Now more than ever, it is important that our tenants feel connected with others, even if they cannot be physically connected. Send a note of encouragement to be shared with our tenants who are feeling isolated at this time.
