Indwell Celebrates Opening and Groundbreaking of new Affordable Housing in St. Thomas

ST. THOMAS, ONTARIO –  SEP 29, 2021 – In January this year, Mayor Joe Preston announced St. Thomas’ Compassionate Community plan. A key part of this plan focuses on providing services and housing for some of St. Thomas’ most marginalized citizens. Indwell, a Christian charity with a nearly 50-year history of providing high quality affordable supportive housing throughout Ontario, is expanding to St. Thomas with the welcome and support of the City.

Today, Indwell celebrated the opening of its first program in St. Thomas, and broke ground on its second project. Indwell plans to create over 100 units affordable housing in St. Thomas that will support people seeking health, wellness, and belonging.

“With exemplary support from the City of St. Thomas and other community partners, Indwell is developing local solutions to homelessness,” said Jeff Neven, CEO of Indwell. “Indwell’s St. Thomas programs will foster community for people seeking to transform their lives – from homelessness to engaged neighbours, from mental health challenges to flourishing wellness, and from dependence to supported independence.”

A vital component to ending homelessness is supportive housing. People transitioning from homelessness often have complex histories of trauma, mental illness, and/or substance use disorders. Professional support can help people maintain housing stability, build skills, and find belonging through contributions to their community.

“The City of St. Thomas is very pleased to partner with Indwell to establish supportive housing,” said Mayor Joe Preston. “We are thankful that Indwell chose St. Thomas as a home for new housing projects that will support some of our community’s most vulnerable people. We look forward to seeing the upcoming projects completed.”

In St. Thomas, Indwell plans to open three programs over the next four years, creating more than 100 units of supportive housing.

  • Railway City Lofts, at 614 Talbot Street, will open in October. Owned by the City and operated by Indwell, this program will welcome home 15 individuals to their own apartments. Operating 7-days a week, the program offers on-site support by an interdisciplinary team, including nursing, addiction support, and housing support.
  • Today, Indwell breaks ground on its second project, which will offer 45 units of supportive housing and include a new Fire Hall.
  • A third project at Ross and Centre is in early development and will offer 45-60 apartments.
