Community celebrates long-anticipated grand opening of Indwell’s Dogwood Suites in Simcoe

Simcoe, Ontario – On Thursday, July 7, Indwell celebrated the grand opening of its newest supportive affordable housing program in Norfolk County. Situated at 41 Norfolk St S in Simcoe, Dogwood Suites was previously the location of The Norfolk Inn.

In recent years, The Norfolk Inn had become a source of negative activities impacting the downtown. Indwell purchased the property in 2018 with plans to convert it into affordable housing. The three-storey building started welcoming tenants in May.

Dogwood Suites features 51 apartments with supports, and ground floor commercial space.

“We purchased the Norfolk Inn in 2018 with the realization that we were meeting a fraction of the housing needs in Haldimand-Norfolk,” says Jeff Neven, Indwell’s CEO. “While the need is still great, we’re so pleased that we can now provide hope for over 50 people in need of supportive affordable housing and be a part of the revitalization of downtown Simcoe.”

Indwell’s first program in Simcoe, Hambleton Hall (203 John St), opened in 2016 and hosts 35 apartments, as well as five transitional apartments for people in need of emergency housing.

“Premier Ford and our government are focused on solving the housing crisis. That’s why our Social Services Relief Fund is providing immediate housing and homelessness relief in communities across Ontario,” said Michael Parsa, Associate Minister of Housing. “Supporting innovative solutions like these new supportive housing units in Simcoe is critical as we work to keep our most vulnerable safe and housed, both during the pandemic and into the future.”

Thursday’s event featured a ribbon cutting ceremony as well as tours of the community spaces and a staged model suite.
